History
Amidst the turbulent
1960s and the topsy turvy 1970s, there were voices of activist and
dedicated clergypeople and civic leaders who sought to create the best of
the times from the most uncertain of times. Fort Schuyler House is one of
the visionary creations (also see Flushing House) of this era.
Presbyterian Senior Services, spearheaded by the Rev. Howard Weaving of
the First Presbyterian Church of Throgs Neck, and the State of New York
collaborated to provide affordable, safe, attractive, well maintained
housing for adults of moderate income. That vision has been alive since
Fort Schuyler House opened its doors in June 1973!
Mission
Statement
Fort Schuyler House, Inc.
was founded as a unique collaboration between Presbyterian Senior Services and
The State of New York.
It exists as a continuing witness to the reality that ecumenical faith traditions
and a culturally diverse secular society can indeed work together to achieve noble,
equitable and worthwhile social goals.
- the recognition of the
resident as a capable, wise and independent adult;
- the provision of affordable,
safe and well maintained housing without regard to race, color, creed, religion,
sex, disability, familial status or national origin;
- the recognition of the
dignity of the individual through the design and maintenance of an attractive
independent living facility;
- the presence of a dedicated
staff committed to serving and assisting the residents of the House;
- the creation
of a community of respect and care within the building and within the
external community of our neighbors;
- the fostering of an
environment committed to the highest functional capacity of the residents;
- cordial and
open lines of communication with residents, the families of residents,
and those from the community who provide essential services to the House;
and
- the
commitment of Fort Schuyler House to the community-at-large to serve as a
politically neutral and respectfully open center of planning and the presentation
of community and cultural activities.
